Gossip Girl Podcast: "In the Realm of the Basses"

Listen Now

Gossip Girl is back, and while we're thrilled to have the show again, we have to admit this episode left us disappointed. Why so much filler? And why bludgeon us with disturbing hints about a plot we really don't want to see happen?

Chuck, Dan and Serena.

Chuck drowns his sorrows -- first in a Bangkok brothel/opium den, then in illicit substances back at home -- while Blair tries to support him and wake him out of his stupor. You'd think that would be plenty to craft an episode around, right? Apparently the writers disagreed, because they also added in Jenny's return to Constance Billard and her confrontation with Queen P, plus Dan and Serena getting back together again. That doesn't sit well with Rufus, who isn't feeling kindly toward the Van der Woodsen women since he found out about his and Lily's lovechild. Of course the secret comes out, and Dan has to deal with the news -- without telling Serena what he knows. What could possibly go wrong there?

We had plenty to talk about: Find out what had us thanking the writers and what made us yell at them, hear what we really think about a potential plot development that the show hinted at, discover how we know Blair would never fit in with the Colony Club women, and find out what the lesson is that we can all take away from the show.

Yes Mia finally someone agrees with me. Aaron and Serena are boring anf Dan and Serena are to aargh.

Jack Bass he seems like an ass so that's all I have to say about him. But since I haven't seen the previews I'm guessing that he and Blair did the dirty. lol and yes Mia, Dexter is an awesome show

When Blair was crying in the mirror I felt so sorry for her. She was heart broken after those words that Chuck said about love.

I hate penelope definately a blair wannabe. Jenny and Eric are great together I missed those two together. They haven't been like that since the first season.

Jackie I agree with you on the 4 richers and Dan just being lonely boy doesn't bother me.

But am I the only one that loves the Kristin Bell voice overs, I think they are completely awesome, she totally made up for the lack of them last episode.

sorry guys I would say more but I'm stll recovering from the flu which I had over the holiday.

Wrong! Rufus looked like an overstuffed pig. The show would be a lot better if both the Humphrey men jumped off a building. They bore me to death and annoy at the same time. It also seems like they are rubbing off on Serena. She should jump with them. I would say take the character-less Nate with her but it seems that wouldn't be necessary. I hardly noticed he was missing till after it was over. The stupid writers should add more Eric in place of Serena and Jenny in the place of Dan. They are way more interesting.
Rufus made me want to throw up. I side with Lily before she sold out. The child is none of Rufus's business. So what if it was one of his shooters? It's a man ego and pride thing in my opinion. If all he cared about was Lily not telling him, then why the hell is he still going to look for the kid? What is he expecting from finding the kid? He can't raise the child who is an adult now. He doesn't even know how to raise his own kids and he wants to add another one to the equation. Seriously?
I only enjoyed Blair, Chuck, and Dorota.

I realy liked this episode except there wasnt any Nate!I MISSED NATE!:(
Im so glad aaron is finaly gone!He was just so boring!
Does anyone know if it's true if Georginas coming back at the end of the season?I read it somewhere and was wondering if theres any truth to it.I hope she is,she brought so much excitment to the show!

I really loved this episode. And I think Rufus looked horrid. I don't know what happened to that guy, but he looks so fug lately and it all cannot be blamed on his turtlenecks.

Lily is the worst mother ever! She's a pretty awful stepmom as well. Now, I now know why Eric tried to kill himself. (Sorry, but it's true.) I love how at the start of the episode she was like "I won't bust into his life and cause chaos for this child" and at the end she was all "Well, okay. Maybe I will bust into his life and cause chaos for this child." Um. Okaaay.

And you're being way too harsh on Chuck. He basically pushed Blair away so she wouldn't be involved with him while he was contemplating ending his own life. And he loves her so much that he basically decided to live for her sake. With no Nate around, poor little Eric not being enough, and nasty Uncle Creepy in the waiting in the wings, Chuck needs Blair in his corner.

Speaking of. I don't care for any type of storyline involving Chuck's uncle going after a highschool girl like Blair. Would the show really do that? It's gross simply because it's her boyfriend's uncle... then you add the age thing... then you add the lame way they revealed it... I hate everything about it. I agree, even adding Nate as a contrivance is better. Or hell, bring back dorky Lord Marcus!

Well, after complaining so much, maybe I didn't like the episode as much as I thought I did.

Don't you guys remember the previews from last season? Episode 17? It showed Serena making out with another guy, Dan asking if Serena cheated, the answer being yes. It wasn't true at all.

I honestly think the Jack/Blair hook-up is a complete fake-out. I think Blair relapsed into bulimia over winter break, and Jack caught her on New Year's. She didn't seem at all concerned about him telling Chuck anything until Chuck tried to jump off the building. I think that was when she realized that Chuck finding out about her relapse just might send him over the edge again - because he would blame himself for hurting her.

Finally, do you really think Blair would demand that Chuck say he love her (she basically asked for it first thing when she saw him at school) if she had slept with his uncle? She would feel guilty as hell. No way would she act so confident around him.

I think if Blair has hooked up with Jack it was either 1. a deal with Jack that he would bring Chuck home if she slept with him or 2. She had no idea he was Chuck's uncle, and was drunk and vulnerable on new years.

I actually thought this was one of the best episodes of the season. We had a lot of interaction between the main characters. There were lots of juicy plots to go around and a fun-filler plot (Jenny/Eric) to keep us entertained.

It seems that you guys only like an episode that is dominated by Chuck and Blair (with an emphasis on Chuck). It's ok to have favorite characters but I feel like you don't give anyone but Chuck and Blair positive praise. There are other entertaining, interesting, layered characters on this show.

I agree with you guys - "Uncle Jack-Jack" and Blair?
What the hell kind of psycho pedophile is this guy?

Personally, I think he has even greasier hair than Aaron, and if it weren't for the 'possibly hooking up with Blair' aspect, I'd say he was just as boring.

All I have to say is, Jenny rocked, Chuck made me cry, and I MISSED NATE. :]
